Port Fréjus is the perfect base for anyone who wants more than just a beach holiday.

Within minutes or a short drive you have world-class diving, dramatic gorges, volcanic hiking trails, and enough adrenaline to fill your holiday.

Here is everything worth doing.

See the Côte d’Azur the way it was meant to be seen.

A microlight flight over Fréjus with ULM Flying Safari gives you the full picture, the deep blue of the Mediterranean, the gold of the beaches, the dense green of the Estérel forests, and the red volcanic rock that makes this coastline unlike anywhere else in France.

You don’t need any experience.

Just the coastline, the sky, and one of those moments you don’t forget.

Somewhere between surfing and skating, the Onewheel is the most fun you can have on land without water.

Holi’Trip runs guided Onewheel sessions through Port Fréjus, along the promenade, through the trails, and by the sea.

Accessible for all levels, genuinely addictive, and one of those things you’ll talk about for the rest of the trip.

Only a few kilometres from the apartment, the Estérel Massif is a protected natural park of volcanic red rock, pine forest, and sea cliffs.

Dozens of marked hiking and mountain biking trails wind through the massif, from easy coastal walks to technical ridge routes above the Mediterranean.

The GR51 coastal path passes through the heart of it.

On a clear day the views stretch to Corsica.

A Segway tour is the fastest way to cover a lot of ground without breaking a sweat.

Guided tours take you along the Port Fréjus coastline, through the marina, and past the best viewpoints in the area.

No experience needed, you’ll have it figured out within minutes.

A good option for a half-day activity between beach sessions.

The walking trails around Fréjus and the Estérel are among the most scenic on the entire Côte d’Azur.

The GR51 coastal path passes through the area, offering clifftop views over the Mediterranean that no road can match.

Shorter loops start directly from the Estérel foothills, an easy drive from the apartment.

Go early in summer. Take water. Worth every step.

Right at your doorstep at only 150 metres from the apartment, the Base Nature is the outdoor hub of Port Fréjus.

Kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing, and swimming all available on site.

Rentals on the spot, no advance booking required for most activities.

The best place to spend a morning before the afternoon sun hits.

The waters around Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël are among the finest diving destinations in the Mediterranean.

The coastline hides shipwrecks, underwater caves, and rich marine life just below the surface.

Visibility is excellent from May through October.

Whether you are a complete beginner looking for your first open water experience or a certified diver after serious depth, local dive centres offer guided dives, PADI courses, and equipment rental.

This is one of the most underrated dive spots on the entire French Riviera.

Roughly 1h30 by car from Port Fréjus, the Gorges du Verdon is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in France.

The canyon drops up to 700 metres into turquoise water, the colour alone is worth the drive.

Hike the rim trails for panoramic views, kayak through the gorge itself, or simply stop at a viewpoint and let the scale of it sink in.

A non-negotiable day trip if you have a car and a free day.

The Rocher de Roquebrune rises dramatically from the coastline between Fréjus and Sainte-Maxime, a 372-metre red sandstone massif with trails that reward every level of hiker.

The summit trail offers 360-degree views stretching from the Estérel to the Maures and out across the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

MARKETS

.. in and around Fréjus

The Var is one of the finest market regions in the south of France.

From the daily covered market in Fréjus to some of the most famous Provençal markets in the country, this corner of the Côte d’Azur rewards anyone who gets up early and follows the smell of fresh bread, lavender honey, and ripe tomatoes.

Daily:

The covered market in the centre of Fréjus is one of the most authentic in the Var.

Local farmers, fishmongers, cheese merchants, and spice sellers fill the stalls every morning with produce that reflects exactly where you are, ripe Provençal tomatoes, fresh olives, tapenade, goat’s cheese, lavender honey, and fish caught the same morning.

Fréjus actually hosts multiple different weekly markets spread across the town and nearby Saint-Aygulf, from Tuesday through Sunday — so there is always something within reach.

Summer nights:

On summer evenings the seafront at Fréjus-Plage transforms into one of the most atmospheric night markets on the coast.

Local artisans, food stalls, live entertainment, and the warm evening air of the Mediterranean. Walking distance from the apartment.

One of those things that makes a summer holiday feel exactly right.

One of the largest and most celebrated weekly markets in the entire Var.

Lorgues has one of the largest weekly markets in the Var on Tuesdays, held under the shade of enormous plane trees in the town centre of this beautiful medieval village.

The stalls overflow with Provençal produce, local wines, artisan ceramics, clothing, and everything in between.

The atmosphere is unhurried, the quality is exceptional, and the village itself is worth exploring before or after.

Approximately 40 minutes from Port Fréjus. Go hungry.

Tuesday & Saturday

An unmissable institution since the early 19th century, the Provençal market awakens every Tuesday and Saturday morning from 8am to 1pm on the Place des Lices, the iconic central square of Saint-Tropez, shaded by century-old plane trees.

Fresh Provençal produce, local cheeses, olive oil, artisan soap, pottery, flowers, clothing, and the kind of convivial atmosphere that makes two hours disappear without noticing.

Locals mingle with tourists over coffee, while merchants recount anecdotes in southern French, turning shopping into a convivial activity.

Adjacent to the Place des Lices, the covered fish market of Saint-Tropez welcomes local fishermen every morning with the catch of the night and the catch of the dawn.

Sea bream, sea bass, red mullet, octopus, and scorpion fish lined up on marble benches. Arrive before 7:30am to see it at its most alive.

Normally 40 minutes from the apartment but keep in mind that it could be really crowded on the way to Saint Tropez and therefore it may take (a lot) longer.

Arrive before 9am for the best selection.

A short drive from Saint-Tropez, the Sunday market at Ramatuelle is held in the Place de l’Ormeau of this beautiful hilltop village.

Smaller and more intimate than Saint-Tropez, with a loyal following of locals and those in the know.

Fresh produce, local artisans, and one of the most picturesque market settings in the region.

Across the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, Sainte-Maxime hosts its main market on Thursday mornings in the town centre, with additional markets on Monday and Friday mornings from April through September.

A more accessible and less crowded alternative to Saint-Tropez with excellent quality produce and a genuinely local atmosphere.

The charming canal village of Port Grimaud, France’s answer to Venice, hosts two markets per week: Thursday morning and all day Sunday.

A beautiful setting, easy to combine with a stroll through the village and lunch on the water.

The Var is exceptional territory for brocante and antique markets.

The villages of Lorgues, Aups, Les Arcs and Grimaud all host regular flea markets where local exhibitors and enthusiasts gather to unearth antiques, vintage furniture, ceramics, and rare finds.

The flea market at Mas de Bagatin in Grimaud is one of the most renowned in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, a must for treasure hunters.

CULTURE

.. and history

Fréjus is one of the oldest Roman towns in France.

Julius Caesar founded the port here in 49 BC, and the traces of that extraordinary history are still visible today, not behind museum glass, but woven into the streets and buildings of a living, breathing town.

Two thousand years of history, two kilometres from the apartment.

Built in the 1st century AD, the Arènes de Fréjus is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in France. It once held up to 10,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.

Today it hosts summer concerts and events, the acoustics are as impressive as the history.

Standing inside it and understanding that this structure has been here for two millennia, in continuous use, in the middle of a modern French town, is one of those genuinely arresting moments that travel occasionally delivers. Do not miss it.

The Cathédrale Saint-Léonce dates to the 12th century and sits at the heart of the old town within a remarkable Episcopal complex, cathedral, baptistery, cloister, and bishop’s palace all grouped together on a single site.

The cloister garden is one of the most peaceful spaces in the entire region, its carved wooden ceiling panels among the finest examples of medieval craftsmanship in Provence.

An hour here feels like stepping entirely outside of time.

The only museum in the world dedicated entirely to Louis de Funès sits in Saint-Raphaël, 10 minutes by car from the apartment.

Inaugurated on July 31, 2019, the museum allows visitors to discover all the facets of the man who occupied French cinema for over 30 years.

Over 350 documents are on show, personal photographs, footage and films, drawings, letters, and film clips, some of which are previously unknown.

Visitors can watch iconic scenes from La Grande Vadrouille, Le Corniaud, La Folie des Grandeurs, and Les Aventures de Rabbi Jacob on screens from the era and on a full cinema screen.

Telephones scattered around the museum let visitors hear Louis de Funès himself telling anecdotes, stories and confessions about his life and work.

A genuinely entertaining visit for every generation, whether you grew up with his films or are discovering them for the first time.

Located directly opposite the Saint-Raphaël SNCF train station.

 Tickets are available online.

Dating to the 4th or 5th century AD, the Baptistère de Fréjus is among the oldest baptisteries in France and one of the finest surviving examples of early Christian architecture in the entire country.

Small, perfectly intact, and free to visit as part of the Episcopal complex.

Most tourists walk straight past it without knowing what it is. But now you know!

The Archaeological Museum holds an outstanding collection of Roman artefacts excavated from Fréjus and the surrounding area, mosaics, sculpture, coins, ceramics, and everyday objects from two thousand years of occupation.

Compact and well-curated, an hour is enough to see everything and understand the extraordinary depth of history beneath your feet.

One of the most unexpected and genuinely moving sights in the south of France.

Built in 1919 by Vietnamese soldiers stationed in Fréjus during the First World War, the pagoda has grown over the decades into a serene complex of temples, shrines, and gardens set in lush parkland just outside the town centre.

The contrast with the Roman ruins two kilometres away could not be greater and that contrast is precisely what makes Fréjus unlike anywhere else on the Côte d’Azur.

The best way to experience the history of Fréjus is simply to walk the old town.

The medieval street plan, the Roman gates, the fragments of ancient wall built into modern buildings, the cathedral square at dusk, it is the kind of place that rewards aimless wandering far more than a structured itinerary.

Allow two hours, wear comfortable shoes, and stop for a coffee at whatever looks good.

The Roman Aqueduct

The remains of the Roman aqueduct that once supplied Fréjus with fresh water from the Siagnole river are still partially visible on the outskirts of town, a remarkable piece of engineering from the 1st century that stretched over 40 kilometres.

A testament to the scale of the Roman settlement here and one of the less-visited historical sites in the area.
